Walking through Georgetown, Guyana recently, I came across a powerful billboard that stopped me in my tracks. The sign features a simple but attention-grabbing message: “Let’s Talk Sex!” followed by text about body autonomy and rights. What struck me most was how this public health initiative by GRPA (Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association) and IPPF (International Planned Parenthood Federation) breaks the silence around a topic that has long been shrouded in secrecy.

Knowledge is Liberation

For many survivors of abuse especially those who were abused more than 30 years ago,  conversations about body autonomy and sexual health were often suppressed during our formative years – considered taboo and shrouded in secrecy and shame. This silence often served to protect abusers while leaving victims feeling powerless and without any information or resources to protect themselves or a place to turn. Having access to information and support services can be transformative for survivors, regardless of their age or stage in their healing journey. The billboard’s direct approach, combined with its emphasis on “my body, my rights,” represents an important shift in public discourse. It breaks the barriers of stigma.

What’s particularly meaningful is how this billboard combines bold messaging with practical resources – including phone numbers and a physical address where people can seek help. Knowledge is protection. For survivors, having access to such resources can spark the courage to reclaim their voice, their autonomy, and their power. By encouraging open dialogue, organizations like GRPA are helping to dismantle the culture of silence that has historically enabled abuse.

“My Body, My Rights”.

Sexual abuse is always the fault of the abuser. Yet, many of us have been conditioned to suppress our emotions—shame, grief, rage, and loneliness—that deeply impact our sense of self and autonomy.

When we deny or numb these emotions, we surrender a part of our power and compromise our rights over our own bodies. It costs us the energy to live fully, the courage to be bold, and the freedom to embrace our creativity and strength. Reclaiming “My body, my rights” means honoring our emotions, facing them, and stepping into the fullness of who we are—brave, powerful, and free to create the lives we deserve.

So, let’s begin letting go of the shame today.

“My body, my rights.”

These four words on the sign are not just a slogan; they’re a lifeline. They represent a shift—a collective unearthing of the silences that once held us hostage. It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to seek information, support, or to reclaim your power through knowledge.

This kind of public health communication does more than just share information – it helps normalize conversations about consent, boundaries, and body autonomy. For those of us who grew up without these resources, seeing such messages displayed openly is both validating and empowering.

It creates a space for open dialogue. For those of us who grew up in environments where these words were whispered—if spoken at all—seeing them displayed so boldly is a testament to progress. It’s a beacon of hope for survivors, proving that it’s never too late to reclaim your autonomy, your voice, and your power.
